Water Purification

A Brief Overview of the History of Water Purification

Water purification has a very long and ancient history for humanity. Historians believe that the history of water purification dates back approximately 2,000 years before the birth of Christ. These purification processes included boiling and filtering water. Early water purification devices were used in households, and until about the first century AD, there was no evidence of any purification operations for community drinking water. It is certain that water purification activities stalled during the Middle Ages and regained attention in the 18th century.

The city of Paisley in Scotland is renowned as the first city whose drinking water was treated. Its water purification system consisted of sedimentation followed by filtration. This system began operation in 1804. Gradually, this method became common in Europe, and by the end of the 19th century, most major urban water sources were filtered, typically using slow sand filters.

The development of water purification practices in America occurred after Europe. From the mid-19th century, filtration was used to improve the visual quality of drinking water.
An unrecognized benefit of filtration was the removal of microorganisms, including pathogenic agents, which also made the water more palatable.
By the end of the century, filtration was considered the primary means of preventing waterborne diseases.
The acceptance of the germ theory of disease transmission led to the practice of disinfecting community water sources.
The first permanent chlorination unit for water treatment was established in Belgium in 1902.
